Verb Position in Subordinate Clauses

SituationOrder at endExample
Simple tenseconjugated verb at end...dat hij werkt.
Perfectumpast participle + auxiliary...dat hij gewerkt heeft.
Modal + infinitiveinfinitive + modal...dat hij kan werken.
Modal perfectinf + past part + modal...dat hij heeft kunnen werken.
Separable verbverb stays together...dat hij opbelt.
Separable perfectumge- between prefix + verb...dat hij opgebeld heeft.

In subordinate clauses, ALL verbs cluster at the end. The main principle: infinitives and past participles come BEFORE the conjugated auxiliary.

Exception: in informal speech, the auxiliary often comes before the past participle: "...dat hij heeft gewerkt" is also accepted.
