niet	Negates nouns with de/het/possessive	Ik zie de auto niet. / Dat is mijn boek niet.
niet	Negates prepositional phrases	Ik ga niet naar huis.

Quick test: if you can replace the noun with "a/an" in English → gebruik geen. Otherwise → gebruik niet.

When there is a place or direction complement, "niet" usually comes before it: "Ik ga niet naar kantoor."
