Cycling Culture
The Netherlands has more bicycles than people. Cycling is not just a hobby — it's the primary mode of transportation. Understanding bike culture is essential for daily life.
Why Cycling Is King
With over 35,000 kilometers of dedicated bike paths (fietspaden), the Netherlands is the most bike-friendly country in the world. People cycle to work, school, the supermarket, and even in the rain. There are more than 23 million bicycles for a population of about 18 million people.
Cycling is for everyone: businesspeople in suits, parents with children, elderly people — it's simply the most efficient way to get around in Dutch cities.

Bike Rules & Etiquette
Always use the fietspad (bike path) — cycling on the sidewalk is not allowed. Use hand signals: stick your left arm out to turn left, right arm for right. At night, you must have a front light (wit) and rear light (rood) — police will fine you if you don't.
Always lock your bike! Bike theft is very common. Use a strong lock (slot) and always lock your bike to something fixed. Many Dutch bikes have a built-in ring lock (ringslot) plus an additional chain lock (kettingslot).

Types of Bikes
The classic Dutch bike is the "omafiets" (grandma bike) — a sturdy, upright bicycle with a step-through frame. Bakfietsen (cargo bikes) are used to transport children, groceries, and even furniture. Electric bikes (e-bikes) are increasingly popular, especially for longer commutes.
You can buy a second-hand bike at markets or shops like Marktplaats (Dutch eBay). Swapfiets offers bike subscriptions — pay monthly and they handle repairs.
